Self learning has been key to every step in my career.

As a museum educator every new exhibit was a new topic to learn, whether banjos or entomological taphonomy  (I’m really handy at trivia night). Shifting into corporate ID, my professional development started with “How do I use Storyline?” and Action Mapping.

Now I’m getting into some deeper and more abstract concepts that I think would benefit from discussion.. A few of the books currently in the hopper:

  • The Instructional Designer’s Guide to Project Management by Guieswende Rouamba

  • Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

  • Homo Ludens: A Study of the Play-Element in Culture by Johan Huizinga

  • Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism by Robert Chapman

  • Talk to the Elephant: Design Learning for Behavior Change by Julie Dirksen

Think of these posts as an informal book club,or at least me keeping myself accountable so I’m not just reading these books and tossing them aside.

I’ll be writing as I go, sometimes a whole book in a single post and sometimes an idea from a single chapter if it’s worth chewing on.

I welcome discussion and criticism to force some thinking in those upper levels of Bloom’s.
