Views from My Pandemic Workplaces
When COVID went international, I was in Thailand waiting for visa paperwork to get processed so I could return to China. However, that whole plan had to get scrapped due to the virus's effect on businesses, and I serendipitously found myself as a freelancing digital nomad. Sometimes you just need to take adventures as they come!
Because my Thai visa ended and I couldn't re-enter China, I entered Malaysia in March. I first checked myself into a nice hotel in Kuala Lumpur after two weeks in a rustic Thai beach house. I stayed there for two weeks, completing the Capstone paper for my MS in Curriculum and Instruction.
I turned the paper in and then I moved to a more affordable hotel near the Central Market. After one day there, Malaysia went under Movement Restriction Orders which limited leaving one's building for anything other than getting necessities. That means that from this point on, these window views were my main view of the outside. I stayed there for about 3 weeks before they shut down and moved me to another hotel near KL Tower.
I stayed at this hotel - hotel number three in Kuala Lumpur - for two more weeks. I worked on my portfolio, professional development, and job searches here. I wouldn't have stayed at this hotel if my first hadn't shifted me to there as it was not affordable. When my reservation here ended, I moved into an AirBnB for a month.
It's been nice to have a kitchen, and the room had a TV that wasn't attached tot he wall so I could use it as a second monitor. Considering not all hotel rooms or apartments have windows, I'm counting myself as lucky to have had these options for this step in my adventure.
